More than anything else, the need for more and better laboratory space has driven the current construction boom. In 2003, the Medical School dedicated its Anlyan Center for Medical Research and Education, a behemoth on Congress Avenue that houses labs for 700 scientists and a magnetic resonance imaging center. At 475,000 square feet, it is the largest building at Yale since the Payne Whitney Gymnasium. It was designed by Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates and Payette Associates.
