The Kurt Schwitters collage, Merz Picture with Rainbow, is widely considered the artist’s masterpiece. The tall figure at the right of the group of African figures is a Songye shrine statue with patterns of brass tacks on its face; it is rare in its large size and the intact state of its feathered headdress and other accoutrements. The Igbo head in front of it has a European’s pointed nose and light skin—and bowler hat (not visible). The man atop the 200- to 300-year-old Mende ivory trumpet also wears a European hat.
