In the romantic era of the mid-nineteenth century, the austere stone slabs of earlier times gave way to more elaborate monuments: large obelisks, rough-hewn stone crosses, boulders, and elaborate Gothic Revival carving. The Trowbridges, a prominent old New Haven and Yale family, spared no expense to commemorate their fallen kin.
