The Brain Bank
January/February 2011

The meticulous and macabre collection of pioneering brain surgeon Harvey Cushing is now on permanent display at the Yale Medical School Library. The Cushing Center features medical records, sketches, medical supplies, patient photographs, and tissues—including the dozens of brains that line its shelves.

The Brain Cutter
Harvey Cushing, father of modern neurosurgery, performed his first operation as a Yale undergraduate. (The “patient” was a dog.) He didn’t work at Yale again for 40 years. But in his will, he left Yale the fruits of his labor. (Jan/Feb 2011)
